Smiling at an insider rock joke. This is a piece of Argentinian fluorite I'm working on for Open Studios.
This is the Dondero Quarry, now abandoned, near Jackson, CA where my latest marble block is from. We hiked in for a mile on a dirt road to reach it. Imagine hauling large blocks of marble out on a wagon pulled my mules.
Renowned sculptor Matt Auvinen demonstrates the use of various hammers at the Oneto Ranch. His left elbow rests on the portion of the marble block, excavated from the Dondero Marble Quarry, later cut for me. It's now awaiting its next incarnation at my outdoor studio in Watsonville.
A little like watching paint dry but my first chance to use an air chisel on stone. Fast work. Good times.

This is a sketch of a proposed sculpture in Indiana limestone for the Aroma Garden at the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum. It would be approximately 3'X2'X2'.
